RMS Titanic, a British passenger ship, sank in the North Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg on its first voyage from Southampton to New York in the early hours of April 15, 1912. There are an estimated 2224 passengers and crew on board, and more than 1500 people have died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. RMS Titanic is the largest floating ship in service and the second of the three Olympic class ocean liners operated by white star line. It was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast. Her architect, Thomas Andrews, died in the disaster.
The Titanic was commanded by Captain Edward Smith, who also sank with the ship. The ocean liner carries some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of immigrants from Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, seeking a new life in the United States. First class accommodation is designed to be the pinnacle of comfort and luxury, with organic fitness room, swimming pool, library, superior restaurant and luxury cabin. High power radiotelegraph transmitter can be used to send passengers "marconigrams" and ships. Although the Titanic has advanced safety functions, such as watertight cabin and remotely operated watertight door, due to the outdated maritime safety regulations, the Titanic can only carry enough lifeboats for 1178 people, accounting for about half of the number of people on board and one third of the total crew. The ship carries 16 lifeboat davits, each of which can lower 3 lifeboats, a total of 48. However, the Titanic carries only 20 lifeboats in total, four of which are foldable and difficult to launch when sinking.
After leaving Southampton on April 10, 1912, the Titanic arrived in thurburg, France, and in Queen's Town, Ireland (now Cove), then headed west for New York. On April 14, four days after crossing, 375 miles (600 kilometers) south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. Time of the boat. The collision caused the hull plate to bend inward along the starboard (right) side and opened five of the sixteen watertight compartments into the sea. She can only endure four floods. At the same time, passengers and some crew members were evacuated from lifeboats, many of them only partially loaded into the water. As a result of the "women and children first" programme to load lifeboats, a disproportionate number of men remained. [6] At 2:20 a.m., she disintegrated and sank more than a thousand people on board. Less than two hours after the Titanic sank, the RMS Carpathia liner, Cunard, arrived and took some 705 survivors.
Because of the huge loss of life and the failure of supervision and operation, the disaster caused shock and anger all over the world. Public investigations in Britain and the United States have led to significant improvements in maritime security. One of their most important legacies is the establishment of the International Convention for the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) in 1914, which still regulates maritime safety. In addition, new wireless regulations have been adopted around the world to absorb many mistakes in wireless communication, which can save more passengers.
The sinking of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 (more than 70 years after the disaster) and left on the seabed. The ship was split in two and gradually disintegrated at a depth of 12415 feet (3784 m). Thousands of cultural relics have been recovered and displayed in museums around the world. Titanic has become one of the most famous ships in history; her memory is preserved by many popular cultural works, including books, folk songs, films, exhibitions and memorials. Titanic is the second largest ocean passenger ship in the world. It was only sunk by her sister hmhs Britannic. It is the largest shipwreck ever. Although the Great Britain was used as a hospital ship, she actually kept the record of the largest shipwreck when she was the inner ship. When she sinks. Millvina Dean, the last survivor to sink, was two months old and died in 2009 at the age of 97.
