Marla buses began to be used in the 1820s, followed by steam buses in the 1830s, and electric trolleybuses in 1882. In 1895, the first internal combustion engine bus, the electric bus, was used. Recently, there has been a growing interest in hybrid electric buses. , fuel cell buses and electric buses, and buses powered by compressed natural gas or biodiesel. As of the 2010's, bus manufacturing has become increasingly global, and the same designs have emerged around the world.

Bus is a cut form of Latin adjective form "for all" (object plural of omnis-e) ("all"). In theory, the full name is French voice omnibus ("vehicle for all"). The name comes from a large-scale transportation service started in 1823 by the owner of a French corn processing plant named Stanislas Baudry in Richburg, a suburb of Nantes. The by-product of his factory is hot water, so a spa was set up next to him. To encourage customers, he started carriage services from downtown Nantes to his company. The first vehicles were parked in front of a shop in a hat factory called omn é s, which had a sign engraved with "omnes omnibus" with his Latin pun. The adjective omnis-e ("all") is used in combination with omnibus, and its object plural means "all people". Therefore, the name of its store is named "omni é s of all people", or "all of all people". His transportation plan was a huge success, although it didn't meet his expectations because most of his passengers didn't go to his spa. He turned transportation services into his main profitable business and closed factories and spas. Nantes soon nicknamed the car "comprehensive.". After inventing the concept of success, baudelay moved to Paris and launched the first comprehensive service in Paris in April 1828. A similar service was launched in London in 1829.

The format includes single deck buses, double deck buses (usually with rigid chassis) and articulated buses (or "clunky buses"), the popularity of which varies by country. You can also make large capacity Bi articulated buses and passenger trailers - either behind rigid buses (bus trailers) or with trucks as trailers (buses). The smaller atrium has a lower capacity and open top buses are usually used for leisure purposes. In many new fleets, especially in the local transport system, there is a shift to lower level buses, mainly for easier access. Coaches are designed for long-distance travel, usually equipped with high back-to-back independent seats, seatbelts, toilets and audio-visual entertainment systems, and can run at a higher speed, with a larger luggage capacity. A coach can be single or double deck, articulated, and usually includes a separate trunk under the passenger floor. Guided buses are equipped with technologies that enable them to travel in designated guideways, allowing targeted alignment at bus stops and taking up less space than traditional roads or bus lanes.

Bus manufacturing can be made by a single company (integration manufacturer) or by one manufacturer building bus bodies on chassis produced by another manufacturer.
