Mascara is usually used to enhance eyelash cosmetics. It may darken, thicken, lengthen and / or narrow the lashes. In general, modern mascara is made of liquid, powder or cream with three formulations. But most contain the same basic ingredients as pigments, oils, waxes and preservatives. The most common form of mascara is the liquid in the tube.
The Collins English Dictionary defines Mascara as "a cosmetic that makes eyelashes darker, longer, curled, coloured and thickened with a brush or stick." The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) adds that mascara is also used on eyebrows.
OED also cited Mascara in the works published in the late fifteenth Century. In 1886, the peck and Snyder catalogue advertised: "Mascaro or water cosmotique... Darken eyebrows and beards without oiling or protruding them." In 1890, the century dictionary defines Mascara as "a coating for eyebrows and eyelashes of actors". 1894, n. Lynn put forward a proposal in Lynn's practical make-up techniques. "Use a small brush to make the eyelash darkened, apply mascara or black paint."
The pigmentation of black mascara is similar to the pigmentation used by Egyptians and women in Vitoria. Black and brown mascara is usually dyed with ferric oxide. Some Mascara contains ultramarine.
Mascara is made up of pigment, wax and oil and the basic mixture of different supporting components. Mascara pigments usually include iron oxide and titanium dioxide, which provide the desired color for mascara. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) accounts for more than 65% of the sales of inorganic pigments. TiO2 makes the pigment white, while different iron oxides provide a variety of colors, such as red, yellow, brown, and black. The particle size of opaque pigment is 0.2-0.3 μ M.
In many used oils, linseed oil, castor oil, eucalyptus oil, lanolin and turpentine are often found. Sesame oil is also commonly used. Wax found in mascara is usually paraffin wax, Brazil palm wax and beeswax.
Some mascara is made from fish scales.
The ideal effect of mascara is the most frequent change of ingredients. Waterproof mascara requires hydrophobic components, such as twelve alkane. The basic ingredients of non waterproof mascara are water soluble. Mascara designed to extend or curl eyelashes usually contains nylon or rayon microfibers.
