Bananas are edible fruits - botanically berries, produced by several large herbaceous flowering plants of the genus Musa. In some countries, contrary to dessert bananas, bananas used for cooking can be called plantain. Fruits vary in size, color, and hardness, but are usually elongated and curved, with fleshy, soft flesh covered by the skin, which can be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe. The fruit grows in clusters at the top of the plant. Almost all modern edible parthenocarpic (seedless) bananas come from two wild species, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. The scientific names of the most cultivated bananas are Musa acuminata, Musa balbisiana and Musa? Weeds? M. Balbisiana, depending on their genome composition. The old scientific name Musa sapientum is no longer used.
Musa species, native to tropical Indomalaya and Australia, is likely to have been domesticated as early as Papua New Guinea. They grow in 135 countries, mainly for fruit, to a lesser extent for fiber, banana wine and banana beer, and as ornamental plants.
In the world, there is no obvious difference between "banana" and "plantain". Especially in America and Europe, "banana" usually refers to soft and sweet dessert bananas, especially those of Cavendish group, which are the main export products of banana growing countries. In contrast, the plantain family, which has harder fruit and higher starch content, is called "plantain". In other regions, such as Southeast Asia, there are more kinds of bananas planted and eaten, so a simple double distinction is useless and not made in the local language.
