Pluto, also known as Pluto the pup, is a cartoon dog made in 1930 at Walt Disney Productions. He is an orange medium-sized short haired dog with black ears. Unlike most Disney characters, Pluto does not personify certain features, such as facial expressions. He is Mickey Mouse's pet. He is an official mongrel dog, appearing for the first time as a hound in Mickey's cartoon iron chain gang. Pluto, along with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and goofy, is one of the "six sentient stars" - the largest star in the Disney universe. Although all six animals are non-human, Pluto alone can't dress up as an adult.
Pluto made its debut in animated movies, appeared in 24 Mickey Mouse movies, and then won his own series in 1937. Between 1930 and 1953, Pluto appeared in 89 short films. Several of them have been nominated for Academy Awards, including the pointer (1939), the rights of the atter (1946), Pluto's Blues (1947), and Mitch and seals (1948). One of his films (lend a paw, 1941) received the award in 1942. Because Pluto doesn't speak, his films usually rely on a sense of humor. Expressing personality through meditative animation rather than dialogue makes Pluto a pioneer in character animation.
Like all Pluto co stars, the dog has been widely featured in comics for many years, making its first appearance in 1931. He went back to dramatic animation in 1990 with prince and begging PA, and also appeared in some direct videos. Pluto also appears in the TV series Mickey Mouse Works (1999 – 2000), mouse house (2001 – 2003), Mickey Mouse Club (2006 – 2016) and the new Mickey Mouse shorts (2013 – present).
In 1998, Disney's copyright on Pluto, which expires in a few years, expanded with the passage of the Sonny Bono Copyright extension act. Disney and other studios lobbied for the bill to keep their rights to characters like Pluto for another 20 years.
