Shrek is a 2001 American computer animation fantasy film, based on William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book of the same name, directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. It starred in the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, and to some extent imitated other films adapted from the fantasies of many children, mainly Disney animated films. The movie focuses on a ogre named Shrek (expressed by Myers), who finds that the fairy tale creatures in the swamp are deported by the evil lar Farquaad (expressed by Lithgow). In order to restore the swamp to its original state, Shrek reached an agreement with Farquaad to take him as Queen in exchange for the swamp contract. Shrek set out with a talking donkey (Murphy's voice) and found Princess Fiona (Diaz's voice). When they took Fiona to faquad so that she could marry him, Shrek fell in love with the princess and soon discovered a shocking secret about her.
Steig's book was originally copyrighted by Steven Spielberg before DreamWorks was founded in 1991, when he considered making traditional animated films based on the book. But John H. Williams persuaded him to bring the film to DreamWorks in 1994, when the studio was founded. After the studio bought the copyright in 1995, Jeffrey Katzenberg quickly put the film into a positive development. Originally as the voice of the title character, 80% - 90% of his conversations were recorded. Before Farley died in 1997, Mike Myers was hired to work for the character, who decided to record his voice in a Scottish accent after the first recording. The film was originally planned for action capture, but due to its poor results, the studio decided to hire Pacific data images to help Shrek get the final look of the computer animation.
Shrek has established DreamWorks Animation as Pixar's main competitor in the field of feature film computer animation, and made 448.4 million dollars in global box office with its production budget of 60 million dollars. It is considered to be an animation film worthy of adults' attention. There are many jokes and themes for adults, but the plot and sense of humor are simple enough to attract children. Shrek won the first Oscar for best animation and was nominated for best adapted screenplay. It has also been nominated for six BAFTA awards, including best supporting actor at the BAFTA Award for "donkey" by deddie Murphy and screenplay adaptation at the BAFTA award. The success of the film prompted DreamWorks to produce three sequels - Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek 3 (2007) and Shrek 2010, two holiday Specials - Shrek Hall (2007) and Shrek afraid (2010), and a derivative film - Puss in boots (2011). The fifth film, scheduled to be the last in the series, was cancelled in 2009, announcing the end of the fourth. However, the fifth film was revived in 2016 and is scheduled to be released in 2019 / 2020. The success of the film also inspired other products, such as video games, stage musicals and comic books adapted from Black Horse Comics. The main character of the film won his star on Hollywood's Avenue of fame in May 2010.
