Walrus is a large flipped marine mammal, which is not continuous in the Arctic Ocean and the Arctic sea of the northern hemisphere. Walrus is the only living species in odobenidae family and odobenius genus. The species is divided into three subspecies: the Atlantic walrus (o. R), which lives in the Atlantic Ocean. Rosmarus), the Pacific walrus (o. R) living in the Pacific Ocean. Diversions) and the ocean. Laptevi, lives in the Laptev Sea in the Arctic Ocean.
Adult walruses are easy to identify because of their prominent ivory, beard and bulkiness. In the Pacific region, where adult males weigh more than 2000 kg (4400 lbs), only two species of elephant seals outnumber their size in shortfin fish. Walruses mainly live in shallow water above the continental shelf, most of the time on the sea ice, looking for benthic bivalve mollusks to eat. Walruses are relatively long-lived social animals and are considered "key species" in the Arctic Ocean area.
Walruses play an important role in the culture of many Arctic Indigenous peoples, who have been searching for walruses' meat, fat, skin, ivory and bone. Walruses were widely hunted in the 19th and early 20th centuries for their oil, ivory and meat. The number of walruses has declined rapidly throughout the Arctic. Since then, although populations of walruses in the Atlantic and Laptev have remained scattered and at low levels compared to before human intervention, their populations have rebounded.
