Alces Alces is an elk (North America) or elk (Eurasia), a member of the new world deer subfamily, and the largest and heaviest extant species in the deer family. The moose is characterized by the wide, palmed (open hand) antlers of the male. The antlers of other members of the deer family have a dendritic ("dendritic") configuration. In temperate to subarctic climate, moose usually inhabit in northern forest and temperate broad-leaved and mixed forest in northern hemisphere. Over time, hunting and other human activities have led to a reduction in the range of elk. Moose have been reintroduced to their former habitats. At present, the majority of moose are distributed in Canada, Alaska, New England (Maine accounts for the majority of 48 states), fenoskania, Baltic States and Russia. Their diet includes terrestrial and aquatic plants. The most common moose predators are grizzly bears, as well as bears and humans. Unlike most other deer species, moose do not form herds, but are solitary animals, with the exception of calves (until the calf begins to heat up) (usually 18 months after the birth of the calf), which drive the calf away. Although it is usually slow and sedentary, if it is provoked or startled, the moose will become aggressive and move quickly. During the mating season in autumn, males fight fiercely for females.
Moose need to have enough habitat for edible plants (such as pond grass, young trees and shrubs), cover by predators, and prevent extremely hot or cold weather. In order to meet these requirements, moose will travel between different habitats according to the season. Moose is a mammal adapted to cold, with thick skin, dense fur, good heat preservation, low surface area / volume ratio, providing excellent cold resistance but poor heat resistance. Moose can survive in hot weather by contacting cool places or wind, or immersing in cold water. In hot weather, moose are often found wading or swimming in lakes or ponds. When heated, moose may not be able to find enough food in summer, and may not be able to get enough body fat to survive in winter. Likewise, without enough summer weight gain, moose cattle may not calve. Moose not only need to enter the young forest for browsing, but also need to enter the mature forest for shelter and cover. The forest disturbed by fire and logging promoted the growth of moose feed. Moose also need to contact mineral licking, safe calving place and aquatic feeding place.
