Orcinus orca is a toothed whale belonging to the dolphin family. It is the largest member. Orcas have a diverse diet, although individual populations are usually dedicated to specific types of prey. Some predators only feed on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as walruses and dolphins. They are known to attack baleen whales and even adult whales. Orcas are born alligators because no animals prey on them. They are cosmopolitan species and can be found in various marine environments in every ocean in the world, from the Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical oceans, only in the Baltic and Black seas and some parts of the Arctic Ocean.
Orcas are highly social. Some populations are made up of matrilineal groups (pods), which are the most stable of all animal species. Their complex hunting techniques and sound behaviors are usually unique to specific groups, and have been described as the embodiment of animal culture from generation to generation.
IUCN assessed the conservation status of Orcas as insufficient data because two or more Orca types are different species. Due to the depletion of prey, loss of habitat, pollution (PCBs), fishing in marine mammal parks and conflicts with human fisheries, some local residents are considered threatened or endangered. At the end of 2005, southern killer whales swimming in the waters of British Columbia and Washington state were listed as endangered species in the United States.
Wild orcas are not seen as a threat to humans, but there are cases in marine theme parks where captive Orcas kill or harm their operators. Orcas have strong characteristics in the myth of indigenous culture. Their reputation varies from human soul to merciless killer.
Orcas are the first natural enemies, which means they have no natural enemies. They are sometimes called Sea Wolves because they hunt in groups like wolves. [93] Orcas hunt a variety of prey, including fish, cephalopods, mammals, seabirds and turtles. Different populations or ecological types may vary, some of which have a significant impact on prey species. However, due to low food productivity, whale eating habits are more common in the tropics.
